What Detroit’s underground music scene needs more than anything is innovation, a reason for people to care, experimentation both musically and economically. Emerging genre ending experimental group the Summer Pledge may be one of the best examples of how a handful of bands can redefine how people look at Detroit concert scene. Catch them at the normally corporatized Post Bar in Ferndale on December 17 with other local acts Blase Splee and Tristorta from Flint town.
A unique approach to a local show, the Post Bar for one night will be a hub for local music lovers. Sports will be replaced with solos, pool with percussion, and thin slice of independent music in a place one would least expect it. The band is already showing incredible talent and vision after only a few months of breaking onto the local music scene. Their first full length album titled “You are You” is one of the most noteworthy releases of the year, spanning multiple genres and solidifying the Summer Pledge’s place in helping to reshape the Detroit underground.
Diversity within the Detroit underground is legendary, only to be commonly associated only with garage rock and independent rap as of late. Experimental rock and pop is not a commonly associated genre vein within the city. New emerging bands including Zoos of Berlin and the Summer Pledge are paving the way for smaller acts to influence the Detroit scene and quite possibly the national scene with a Detroit style of experimental rock and indie pop. Don’t miss the Summer Pledge as they bring amazing experimental rock to the scene and hopefully sway public opinion about a Detroit underground scene that is very much alive.
