St. Vincent at the Crofoot

St. Vincent

Emerging from Texas of all places, solo artist Annie Clark has burst onto the independent music scene as St. Vincent. The power hitters in the realm of hipster publication gave her rave reviews on her debut release Marry Me as well as her sophomore album Actor. Unconventional arrangements and wonderful lyrics make are causing a snowball of St. Vincent fans to emerge. On February 19th she will appear at the Pike Room in Pontiac with Wildbirds and Peacedrums. The small venue means that it would probably be wise not to underestimate the following of St. Vincent and grab tickets as soon as possible.

After the release of Marry Me Clark capped off a year of international touring by wining the Plug’s Female Artist of the Year award. Picking up where the first album left off, Actor incorporates sophisticated arrangements with theĀ  haunting and beautiful voice of Clark on top. Cutting lyrics and mesmerizing vocals, her second release is much more grandiose in its approach, an aspect that many fans adore, some dislike. Somewhat of a concept album, Clark immerses herself in some of her favorite films, the songs being sort of a secretive score to the film, and later branching off into her own independent style of music.

Deep concepts mixed with Clark’s magnetic stage presence makes a St. Vincent live show a unique experience, enjoyable to even the harshest of music/film critics. Sweeping listeners into a fantasy landscape, the many textures of St. Vincent’s music is both tense and peaceful, full of hidden meanings enveloped within infectious pop songs. The perfect follow-up to Marry Me, Actor is sort of a movie conceptualized within the mind of St. Vincent and cryptically shared with the audience. It’s artsy, it’s sophisticated, and it’s damn near perfect. Don’t miss Clark while she’s still relatively new to the indie scene, an artist that is destined to shine as one of the breakthrough artists in the genre. Tickets for the Pike Room show are $12 in advance and doors are at 8pm.
