It’s basically the story of the entire year, a gathering of virtually every band that has been covered by the Detroit underground press, a variable smorgasbord of everyone cool in the Detroit area. More bands playing at more venues than you could possibly see, the Hamtramck Blowout 2010 promises to be an awesome time. Since the inception of Detroit Underground, we’ve done our best to highlight the best talent in Detroit, attempting to become a competitor in the Detroit free rag market. Here is our humble list of bands that you probably shouldn’t miss.
Computer Perfection – Awesome guys, awesome experimental pop. Some of the strangest arrangements you’ve heard in quite awhile. Even as far as national acts go, these guys’ creativity is relatively unmatched in the world of indie/experimental pop. Truly one of the highlights of the blowout.
Detroit Cobras – This one is kind of a no-brainer. Garage rock legends drawing influence and sometimes direct music from the Motown days, the Cobras are one of the most inventive cover bands that the city has ever seen. If you haven’t heard the nostalgic sound of the band and the powerful vocals of Rachael Nagy yet, this is your chance to see them for dirt cheap.
I, Crime – Artistic indie rock put in a way that is unique, catchy, and emotional all at once. Quickly climbing the ladder of the Detroit underground scene, this is one of the hardest working bands in the city. You’ve heard them at random dives in the downtown area, now see them at what may be the biggest show of their young career.
Prussia – Another one of those experimental pop bands that might make you shake your head and wonder where they draw their creativity from. An incredibly unique voice atop layered melodies and spacey instrumentals makes them a live performance you should probably check out.
Robin Parrent – Crazy, creepy, and unique baroque pop style music, Robin Parrent is like the Dresden Dolls without Amanda Palmer. Infinitely catchy and a breath of fresh air in the underground scene, if you haven’t heard Robin Parrent before, it’s time you did.
Rogue Satellites – Emotional pop, indie rock, indie psychedelic, hell I don’t know. The wide expanse of genres that Rogue Satellites covers is difficult to describe in words. Just watch their visual heavy live performance and decide for yourself.
Scarlet Oaks – One might not think that the city of Detroit has an alt country band worth mentioning. Well, one would be wrong. Scarlet Oaks represents frankly, kind of a baffling sound within the Detroit area. It’s amazing.
Silverghost – Think experimental with Von Bondies type guitar. Actually that’s literally what you’re dealing with. A great hybrid of synthesizer and awesome guitar, Silverghost is yet another indie pop band of Detroit evolving divergent of other bands within the scene.
60 Second Crush – Adopting the sound of some of the bands that helped cement Detroit into the punk rock scene, 60 Second Crush is a ruthless example. It’s been awhile since punk rock has shown it’s dominance in Detroit underground coverage, but this is one of the bands keeping the scene fresh.
The Hadituptoheres – Perhaps I spoke too soon with the statement above. The Hadits are another painfully punk rock outfit with a lot of unique approaches to the genre. Like many individuals, their sickness with current music fuels their aggressive style of hooky music and pissed off vocals. This will be a fun show.
The Phage – Impossible to classify, sure to blow listeners away; the Phage is a great example of individuals who could care less about fitting a genre or impressing listeners. Relying on their own views on the world and great musicianship, the Phage is something out of the ordinary that you won’t regret seeing.
The Summer Pledge – Experimental and sentimental as hell, the Summer Pledge is one of the most inventive bands to emerge within the Detroit scene in quite awhile. Textured, ambient, and technical, this show will jerk listeners all over the emotional spectrum.
Zoos of Berlin – I’m not too sure why we’re so obsessed with the experimental pop scene within the city, but it is truly noteworthy. Zoos of Berlin might be the shining example of exposing the movement to the rest of the nation. Don’t miss what will likely be the next thing out of Detroit.
