On Sunday July 10th, Matisyahu performed his soulful music in the sweltering heat of St Andrews Hall in Detroit, Mi. Matisyahu and his band mix great reggae vocals with a bit of beat box to create fresh new sounds. This is not their first time to play in Michigan. In 2009, Matisyahu played an afternoon set at the Rothbury music festival, as well as a show at St. Andrews in December. Prior to his concert Matisyahu sat with friends, family, and fans for a kosher vegan thai dinner at the Detroit Moise House. The meal was catered by a Chef Cari Kosher Catering from Oak Park, Mi. I had the chance to speak with Cari, and she told me that her meal was so well received that Matisyahu asked her to cater dinner for his next two shows in Columbus, Oh and Grand Rapids, Mi.
Opening up for Matisyahu was Tea Leaf Green from San Francisco, Ca. They started out as a jamband, but through the more recent years have slowly moved into incorporating a punk / pop type of sound. While they remain somewhat under the radar, Tea Leaf Green has been consistently touring throughout the years, and made a stop on Sunday in Detroit alongside Matisyahu.
