David BlairDetroit lost one of its most beloved spoken word artists this weekend. National Poetry Slam champion David Blair was found dead by his maid, and it is speculated that he suffered from a heatstroke.

Among Blair’s many accomplishments, including his book, Moonwalking, his band, The Boyfriends, and poetry performances alongside Stevie Wonder and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Blair taught poetry in the Detroit Public School system, Hannan House Senior Center and the YMCA.

Blair will be remembered for touching the hearts of people everywhere he went, through everything he did. He loved the city of Detroit more than anything, and wanted nothing more than to see her shine. Those in attendance will never forget his 2009 performance at TEDxDetroit, While I Was Away, which he ended to a standing ovation, and not a dry eye in the audience.

It is sad to see the life of someone so important to this city taken from us so suddenly. He will be remembered forever, by the many pieces of his legacy that he left behind.
