Formed in 1999 and fronted by the hard-edged Wendy Case, the Paybacks are a pop punk/garage supergroup from the heart of Detroit composed of members of Rocket 455, the Hentchman, and the Muggs. Some compare the vocal styling of Case to that of Lemmy Killmister of the legendary metal outfit Motorhead. They have released three albums “Knock Loud”, the aptly named “Harder and Harder” and 2006’s third album “Love, Not Reason”. With a relentless tour schedule, The Paybacks have developed into one of the hardest working acts of today’s garage scene.
The band found its way onto film and television scores including ABC’s 2004 telecast of the Academy Awards, which opened with the Paybacks track “Hollywood” and two nights of live performances from the band on NBC’s “Last Call with Carson Daly.” With a reputation for big, arena rock riffs, emotionally charged lyrics and an explosive live show, The Paybacks continue to exemplify the power and integrity that have become the band’s hallmarks.
Although not currently together, the band recently reunited and played a show at the Magic Bag in Ferndale to benefit breast cancer. Still seen as one of the seminal bands in the Detroit garage movement, the Paybacks have appeared on Little Steven’s Underground Garage and the Detroit Rock City Festival among other important underground events within the state.
Those unfamiliar with their music should definitely check out some of their releases and see how a hard core rocker chick and some seasoned musicians can create music that doesn’t suck. The heavy guitar and punk influence is a great example of the Detroit garage sound and an essential part of the city’s underground music development.
