Johnathan Diener – Drums

From the down home, hickish city of Fenton, MI and the ghettofied, murder capital of the U.S. Flint, MI comes the pop punk outfit the Swellers. Their music is blazing fast, and draws a lot of influence from 1990s skate punk. The current lineup consists of Nick Diener (guitar & lead vocals), Jonathan Diener (drums & backing vocals), Ryan Collins (guitar) and Anto Boros (bass). They are signed to Fueled By Ramen. The Michigan boys enjoyed a leg on the 2005 warped tour and since then have played with bands including A Wilhelm Scream, Only Crime, Less Than Jake, Streetlight Manifesto, the Artist Life, Polar Bear Club, and Paramore.

The Swellers self-released their first two EPs (Long And Hard in 2002, End of Discussion in 2003) and in 2005, Beginning of the End Again was released on Search and Rescue Records (US) and Radtone Music (Japan). The band’s debut full-length, entitled My Everest, was released June 5, 2007 on Search and Rescue Records. The Swellers are without a doubt one of the hardest working bands in the Detroit local scene touring almost nonstop. Their newest album, titled Ups and Downsizing, was put out on Fueled by Ramen. Currently, The Swellers are an opening act for Paramore’s ‘brand new eyes’ tour, which started on September 29, 2009.

Following in the footsteps of many successful Flint artists including Michael Moore, M.C. Breed, Grand Funk Railroad, and Repulsion, the Swellers have created a style of hard edged punk rock that is still very accessible to the casual listener. Claiming to not being good at anything but touring, the Swellers to this day spend most of their time traveling the country, sleeping on friends’ floors, and rocking the hell out of their audiences.

Ups and Downsizing is a great depiction of the frustration and issues that individuals from Michigan are currently dealing with as well as the state of the economy before the recession. Perfectly illustrating the maturing of the band and their ability to keep their music relevant to fans in their home state, the Swellers are one of newest members of the Detroit underground to break into the mainstream.
