Existing as a Detroit based quartet for the better part of two years and recently becoming a qunitet, the Summer Pledge incorporates elements of prog/ambient/post-rock backed by deep, exploratory content. Feedback heavy vamping backed by meaty guitar and crafty drums creates a wall of multi-layered and infinitely expansive sound. Originally formed via “mutual previous band envy” and started up in 2007 after meeting Jeremy Damaske through former band-mate Matt Conzett (Letters in Binary). Since becoming an official band, the Summer Pledge has catapulted into the Detroit music scene, establishing a distinct sound highly divergent from the garage style rock listeners expect Detroit indie music to emulate.
The airy and ambient swirl of shoegaze and space-rock produced by plenty of feedback, syncopated beats, understated vocals, and introspective lyrics is unlike anything you’ve ever heard from the Detroit scene. Their debut album You are You is a swirl of post-rock brilliance consisting of an apex blend of indie rock elements shrouded by a wall of sound and able to change beat and direction without warning. Upon first listen of their debut it is clear that the Summer Pledge cuts no corners when dealing with their music. Each track flows directly into the next with no interruption, disturbance, or detraction from the mostly peaceful yet intermittently intense maelstrom of sound.
Signed to the Detroit based Woodbridge Records label run by fellow Detroit musicians Noman, the Summer Pledge gushes talent, a band likely to snowball into one of the most successful acts the local scene has witnessed in quite awhile.
