White Stripes

Jack White – Vocals, guitar
Meg White – Drums, vocals
Jack and Meg White may be two of the most well known names in the Detroit garage scene. After releasing three albums in the Detroit underground scene, the then married couple rose to prominence in 2002. Their albums White Blood Cells and Elephant gain the attention and praise from media outlets around the United States and United Kingdom. Continuing on their path of critical acclaim, the White Stripes released the albums Get Behind me Satan in 2005 and Icky Thump in 2007.
Known for their low fidelity and do it yourself approach to recording, the punk/blues influenced band features basic and raw compositions and performances that cut straight to the chase. They are also known for their fashion and design aesthetic which involves color schemes of black, red, and white. Those who follow the underground scene know that the White Stripes are heavily influential to it and draw much of their own influence from the pre-existing Detroit indie rock scene. Jack White has been a member of popular bands including the Raconteurs, the Upholsters, and the Dead Weather. Although the White Stripes are currently still together, they are on hiatus and their future remains unknown.
The White Stripes are one of many back to basics type of rock bands emerging from the Detroit area to the joy of many rock critics and music fans alike. Legendary music influence John Peel compared their influence to that of Jimi Hendrix and the Sex Pistols; quite large names to be compared to. Although their actual role as innovators is debated, the White Stripes are still seen as some of the best interpreters of the garage rock genre, incorporating elements of such bands as Television, the Kinks, the Doors, and other 60s garage punk acts.
One does not have to look very closely to see the impact that the Stripes have had on the Detroit underground culture, or to see some of Jack White’s other side projects including supergroup the Dead Weather, or his production of Elvis Presley’s ex wife Wanda Jackson’s new album.
