The term ‘original cover band’ may not make a whole lot of sense, but listening to the unique Detroit Cobras music, you’ll get where they’re coming from. Unearthing some of the more obscure Motown, soul, and 50′s rock songs and recreating them with a garage vibe is what the Cobras are all about. The result is a bunch of ancient tunes with a fresh garage rock feel completely reminiscent of old blues and roots style rock and roll.  The beautiful singing voice of frontwoman Rachel Nagy is also a huge plus.

For those who want to hear their favorite tunes from back in the day completely reinvented, check out the Detroit Cobras. Examples of their innovative work can be heard in tracks such as Otis Redding’s “Shout Bama Lama” or Mary Wells’ “Bye”. One more thing, they put on one hell of a live performance.

The Detroit Cobras are unique in the sense that most of their fans appreciate the obscure Motown and blues tunes, but are far too young to have a point of reference. Singer Rachel Nagy has just enough grit, lust, emotion, and heartache in her singing to make a convincing argument that these are in fact blasts from the past redone in filthy garage rock fashion. In all honesty, even the band states that most of the time people don’t even know that they’re doing covers. Their sound is so unique and their pool of material they are drawing from so deep, that for all intensive purposes, the Detroit Cobras may as well be considered an original act.

At one point, the Detroit Cobras decided that they didn’t just want to make the covers a copy of a copy of a copy, etc., but rather do the classics their own way. Sing it worse, make it their own, make it completely original.
