Formed in 1996, the Electric Six is considered a genre blending band which incorporates elements of garage, disco, punk, new wave, and metal. The band’s first notorious formation comprised Dick Valentine (vocals), Rock and Roll Indian (guitar), Surge Joebot (guitar), Disco (bass, former member of Detroit Cobras), and M (drums). Dick Valentine (real name Tyler Spencer) has always been the primary songwriter (both music and lyrics) of Electric Six, currently and under their former incarnation, when they were known as the Wildbunch.
Fusing rock and punk with funk rhythms and falsetto vocals of disco days, they are often pigeonholed as disco-metal and disco-punk, genres which they wildly reject. Critics have termed their lyrics as “disaffected, angry, ironic, and lustful” and containing subject matter including human sexual behavior, masculinity, dancing, hyper-sexuality, fast food, and fire.
Originally playing Detroit underground music venues including the Gold Dollar and the Old Miami, the band was part of the central Detroit rock scene that produced bands like the White Stripes. The release of their 2003 album Danger! High Voltage was said to have Jack White singing backups on the title track, a rumor which surrounded the band with popularity and controversy. To this day I honestly couldn’t even tell you if White was in fact on the track, but it’s also rumored that he did contribute vocals on the track Gay Bar from the same album.
After a few lineup changes and the releases of albums including Fire (2003), Señor Smoke (2005/2006), Switzerland (2006), I Will Exterminate Everything Around Me That Restricts Me From Being the Master (2007), Flashy (2008), and Sexy Trash (2008), the Electric Six has become the band they are today with their currently lineup and well defined electronic/metal sound.
Their most recent album titled KILL was released on October 20, 2009 on Metropolis Records and has received great reviews from various underground music publications. Previous names for their latest release include The Sign of the Beefcarver, and Jared Styles.
