Since the debut release of their Innocence Isn’t Easy EP, Scarlet Oaks has established themselves as a dynamic band spanning many different genres. Elements of alt-country, folk, garage rock, and psychedelic, the band offers a unique style of music and a new form of Detroit underground music. From the up tempo “Saint Anne Street Blues” to the Motown influenced “Reckless Stars”, Scarlet Oaks embodies the essence of the Detroit sound and updates it to modern independent music.
Three part harmonies over solid instrumentals makes the band one of the best rock outfits to emerge within the Detroit scene in quite awhile. A direction normally not pursued by Detroit musicians, the twangy and folky style of garage rock that Scarlet Oaks offers is truly beautiful and unique. Meeting at a pig roast outside of Lansing, founding members Steve McCauley and Noelle Christine Lothamer begun discussing music and what would eventually become Scarlet Oaks.
The rich sound of Scarlet Oaks comes from the members all having rock influences in common along with a songwriter who draws much of his influence from folk and country. The result is a twangy form of Detroit garage rock unlike anything you’ve ever heard. Scarlet Oaks is currently working on the followup to their Innocence Isn’t Easy EP along with the addition of a lead guitarist and drummer. They are also touring extensively in the Detroit area and will appear at the Hamtramck Blowout.
Singer Steve McCauley explains that the music of Scarlet Oaks sounds sort of like Detroit looks; the biggest small town you’ve ever seen, a rural metropolis full of grit and concrete along with a rustic nature.
