The Rogue Satellites (not to be confused with Rogue Satellites) are an experimental pop/space rock band straight out of the underground of Detroit music. Incorporating brilliant lyrics, haunting synthesizer, and powerful indie rock drums, the band is a rare breed of pop music. While many satellites orbit the earth in a constant pattern, the Rogue Satellites orbit in their own manner, each song wittier than the next, each performance more solid. With such an emphasis on cleverness and unique content, the Rogue Satellites actually have a disclaimer on their Myspace page; it reads:
This material, while satirical, overtly provocative and sometimes derogatory, is intended to challenge sensibility and sensitivity, not to injure. If you feel that you have been injured by this material, please inform the authors.
If this sounds like the type of local band you could embrace, you’re not alone. Currently in the process of making a full-length album, get the chance to see the Rogue Satellites at the Hamtramck Blowout and catch some of their amazing new and old material. Fans of Detroit style pop synthesized beats resembling old school Nintendo, and content full of wit will undoubtedly love the unrelenting sound of The Rogue Satellites. Singer Jaye Thomas is a true wordsmith; brilliant, dry, and always catchy, while the instrumentals offer unique pop arrangements perfectly upbeat and at times downright strange.
Those who have attended live shows speak highly of their talent not only as songwriters, but performers. Those who have experience The Rogue Satellites first hand can only describe the instrumentalists in the band as machines and a vocalist who truly breaks away from the prescribed and mundane. Their breed of saccharine power-pop is unlike anything you’ve likely heard within the Detroit underground or anywhere else in the world. Finally emerging onto the the Detroit music scene as one of the rising talents to watch out for, the Rogue Satellites are beginning to fly high. Not quite indie rock, not quite pop, but a perfect hybrid of the two. Anytime you put a synthesizer with real instruments, a strange sound tends to be produced; the Rogue Satellites pull this off commendably.
