Blind Pig

Blind PigLocation:
208 South First Street
Ann Arbor, MI

Over the years the Blind Pig of Ann Arbor has become a staple in the underground music scene of Detroit hosting such legendary independent bands as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Whiskeytown. The Downtown Ann Arbor atmosphere is one of the hippest in the state and the Blind Pig reflects the style of those in the know. The Blind Pig started off as a blues bar but has evolved into a venue for all different types of underground music. Sometimes hosting DJs, electronic acts, hip hop artists, and of course the blues and rock, it is Ann Arbor’s main attraction for quality underground music before it breaks into the mainstream. Fans of dive bars and modest establishments will love the subtle nature of the Blind Pig and the 8 Ball lounge downstairs that according to some occupants “smells like hell and feels like paradise”.

The venue is small and does get crowded/smoky easily, but the indie feel of the place cannot be understated. From the cash only bar to the free popcorn and myriad of Ann Arbor hipsters, the Blind Pig may be the only established indie rock venue in the entire city. Having hosted some of the bands that became indie rock staples is definitely a point of pride for the establishment, and it still hosts great bands that nobody has heard of and have the potential to become well known artists with in the vein. The sound at the Blind Pig is decent at best, but for a small venue, the experience is well worth it.

The level of fun one has at the Blind Pig hinges greatly on who they are seeing, how crowded the venue is, and how drunk the person is. A correct combination of any of these will result in one of the best indie rock experiences, while the wrong combination will still be a story for the ages.
