Fillmore Detroit
Location:
2115 Woodward Avenue
Detroit, MI
Previously known as the State Theater, the Fillmore Detroit is the place to go for some of the more mainstream (yet still awesome) events in the Detroit area. Home to mostly metal and indie rock shows, the Fillmore Detroit has an incredibly spacious setup perfect for moshing your ass off and still being able to make a clean getaway just before you die of suffocation. Unfortunately owned by Live Nation (which usually means service charges out the waz), tickets are generally more expensive, but big name acts play here, plain and simple. Smoking has also been disallowed except in designated areas, which is kind of a hassle for many underground participants, but that seems to be the way things are headed all around.
Originally built in 1925, the theater was known as the Palms Theater. Most of its history was solidified during the days when it was known as the State Theater (many Detroit residents still refer to it as such) and contains two levels of seating as well as and grand lobby and bar and grill. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
Built in the Renaissance Revival type of architecture, the Fillmore Detroit was built during a time when the population of the city was absolutely booming. Having undergone many modernizing renovations, the Fillmore is currently used for large scale music events and rarely home to Broadway and theatrical performances which are usually associated with the neighboring Fox Theater. In 2007, the theater announced that it would be part of the expansion of the ever growing Fillmore brand and is now operated by Live Nation which will one day take over the world.
