Magic Stick
Location:
4120 Woodward Avenue
Detroit, MI
Rolling Stone magazine has hailed the Magic Stick in Detroit to be one of the best venues for live music in the city. The home of such famous Detroit underground acts as the Detroit Cobras, White Stripes, and Von Bondies, the Magic stick is also where national and global underground acts frequent while enjoying Detroit. Famous underground acts such as the Jim Carroll Band, Mudhoney, and the Skatalites are just some of the acts to have appeared at the Magic Stick. Still considered the best place to catch a rock show in Detroit, the Magic Stick has weekly concerts that are a nice blend of local and national acts on the cutting edge of the underground music scene.
Closely related to the Majestic Theatre, the Magic Stick is one of many underground attractions on the block including the Garden Bowl which is the oldest active bowling center in the U.S. A bar, 10 billiard tables, and a stage make shows at the Magic Stick enjoyable no matter how you choose to interact at a concert. Get drunk, play pool, thrash, it’s all supported by the Magic Stick layout.
The venue is very spacious while remaining intimate. The stage is of ample size, but it’s so close to the crowd that bands have been known to simply play the show IN the crowd depending on the size. There is a balcony to the left of the stage for those rare Michigan summer nights, and the consensus is that even when big name acts come to the Stick, there is always room to dance, drink, whatever. The Magic Stick is basically the epitome of what a Detroit venue ought to be.
