Royal Oak Music Theatre

Royal Oak Music TheatreLocation:
318 West Fourth Street
Royal Oak, MI

The classic venue of the Royal Oak Music Theatre originally opened under the name the Kunsky Royal Oak in 1928. Since then it has been the prime location in Royal Oak not just for music but for all of the entertaining arts. The theater has undergone many changes since then, but it remains a great place to catch any show that happens to mosey through the Detroit area. Some of the biggest names in indie rock (that never hit the mainstream) have made it to the Royal Oak Music Theatre such as Sonic Youth, Built to Spill, and more.

Whether it is a breakthrough act coming to the Detroit area in concert, or comedians making their way through the Motor City, the Royal Oak Music Theatre is an area close enough to Detroit that they are likely to hit. Originally constructed as a movie theater, the venue is spacious and elegant feel, making it a great place to mosh and smoke cigarettes (although I believe the recently outlawed smoking inside). Although the shows range from underground to painfully mainstream, the Royal Oak Music Theatre is a great place to catch a gem of an independent rock show at times.
