St Andrews Hall
Location:
431 East Congress Street
Detroit, MI
St Andrews Hall is a legendary location in the Detroit underground music scene. From the days of Detroit underground punk all the way up to more current acts within a similar vein, St Andrews Hall brings the best of the counterculture to the Detroit music scene. Jane’s Addiction (1988), Soundgarden (1989), Alice in Chains (1992), Nirvana and Pearl Jam (1991). There is no real backstage area so it is usually possible to ham around with the bands before and after the show. The sound system is decent, and the balcony makes it possible to see shows from different angles.
The Shelter is also located within the confines of St Andrews Hall and offers a completely different sound than the upstairs area. Remodeled in the 1990’s, the Shelter has won awards for its use of space and has hosted a wide variety of bands from hardcore punk to new wave, to straight up rock. There are some couches and a pool table for those looking to relax, and the small venue is a great place to catch some up and coming bands before their act gets too big to afford.
